The research also recommended that

Police involvement in dealing with prostitution is strengthened and the role of a non-arresting police liaison officer established. Improvement of Police responses to residentsÇ information and the collection of information on violent men are necessary. Dealing effectively with pimping and standardising responses by the police to prostitution inWalsall are seen as essential.

Funding is found for training to give women the option of leaving prostitution and support given to those who want to start a new way of life or career. It is also important to provide education to women on safety issues and the awareness of risks.

Work with all children in Walsall is increased to educate them about prostitution with a view to reducing the numbers starting sex work and increase the protection of those who do get involved. Work to produce a safety strategy that all agencies, residents and women agree to and are committed to work towards.

Alternatives to fining sex workers are found. For many years women have been fined for prostitution, which has meant that with no other means of paying the fines, they have had to return to the street to get the money. The alternative is being sent to prison for non-payment. This system has not prevented prostitution but reinforced it so it is important that alternatives to fining working women are found. Anti Social Behaviour Orders (A.S.B.O.s) are now being used against women sex workers to prevent them working in specific areas. They risk imprisonment if this order is broken. These orders have yet to be used against pimps. Safety aspects expressed by the residents, local businesses and women sex workers led to a recommendation that discussion should take place about the setting up of street safety or tolerance zones and the toleration of off-street establishments. In order that agencies can learn from each other, Walsall must be involved with any Regional strategy regarding all aspects of prostitution.
